Below are some symptoms suggesting that a root treatment, called root canal treatment, is needed :
- Spontaneous pain that may wake you at night
- Sensitivity to heat that calms with cold
- Red, hot and swollen gums adjacent to a tooth
If the tooth is infected (presence of an abscess), the dentist initially starts by disinfecting the root canals, i.e. the roots of the tooth. Antibiotics are usually necessary to eradicate the infection. Afterwards, once the infection has been treated, the dentist performs root canal filling with a fluid-tight material that prevents any new bacterial infiltration.
In complex cases, the dentist uses a surgical microscope. It provides increased visibility and allows the dentist to treat, for example, fissures that are invisible to the naked eye.
